The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of a Bachelor degree from this University or any other institution recognized by Senate, with at least Second Class Honours or Category II.

The admission of applicants may be made conditional on the result of an interview conducted by an interviewing board appointed for the purpose.

The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three members.

The Master of Gender Studies is offered at both the University of Malta and the University of Malta – Gozo Campus.

Equality legislation underlines that gender equality should be mainstreamed in service provision, policy and research. This specialisation is not currently available at an advanced level and the objective of this programme is to promote it among potential service providers, policy makers, researchers and employers.

The course consists of a taught component (30 ECTS credits) and research component (60 ECTS credits). The structure of the proposed programme is designed to provide you with the opportunity to work directly with a specifically chosen supervisor, who will guide you towards new knowledge and research skills.

The aim of this proposed programme is to allow you to apply Gender epistemologies and methodologies to a specific area of your choice. The programme is designed as being predominantly research based, allowing you and your supervisor to engage in an in-depth study in a particular area of interest, thereby contributing to a richer understanding of Gender Studies.

You are expected to cover all the prescribed readings and participate fully in all activities related to the programme. You are advised to keep pace with the work set, allowing sufficient time for any research work and/or revision.

Students are required to obtain a total of 90 ECTS credits over a period of 6 Semesters of part-time study.Students will be required to register for the study-units as directed by the board.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in semester 1 of academic year 2025-26 and continue up to the end of semester 2 of academic year 2026-27.
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Gender Studies - MGS - under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • demonstrate a deep understanding and knowledge of the subject.
  • critically evaluate and review existing literature and research.
  • plan, manage and conduct appropriate research in the field.
  • be able to analyse and interpret findings, giving meaning to identified trends, phenomena and findings.
  • document, communicate, demonstrate and share findings with other researchers through well planned, presented and explained relevant documentation.
  • collate, document and present a dissertation respecting academic standards.

It is our vision that you will become a champion in the subject area and will be able to disseminate and promote findings and outcomes derived from the research. You will also benefit from a particular epistemological stance when carrying out research which would empower both you and the researcher.

It is expected that the research programme will not only enrich you in terms of personal and professional knowledge and skills, but will also allow you to transfer this new found knowledge to fellow researchers, professional colleagues and to society in general.

Since this programme is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, we anticipate interest in the programme from a broad range of applicants with backgrounds in all disciplines (from Engineering, Architecture and ITC to Arts, Humanities).
